In game theory, a mixed strategy means you don’t always choose the same action. Instead, you assign probabilities to different options and make your choices according to those probabilities. In other words, you deliberately introduce variation—not because you’re uncertain, but because it makes you harder to read.
A simple example is rock-paper-scissors. If you always pick rock, your opponent will quickly catch on and start choosing paper. The optimal strategy is to randomize—choose rock, paper, and scissors each with one-third probability. That way, your opponent can’t predict your next move.

While the concept is simple, applying it is hard. People naturally dislike randomness. We crave control and patterns—even when they work against us. A good mixed strategy requires discipline: you must accept that variation and apparent randomness can actually be strengths.
One practical tip is to use tools to help you randomize. In games, you might let a coin flip or an app decide your next move. In business or negotiations, you can plan in advance when to change tactics, so you don’t fall into predictable routines.
